Libre office was an open source office suite developed by "The document foundation" which was created by the developers at openoffice.org. Since oracle acquired sun,the open office suite was not meant to be open source now as the new libre office will do the needs of the open source alternate. Libre office provides 6 much useful office applications.LibreOffice 3.3.0 is the current stable version.
