Airtel launches SMS facility for Twitter

Twitter – the buzzword in Internet has now got the ability to send and receive tweets via ShortMessagingService (SMS).Earier Twitter launched SMS facility , but it discontinued it because of the cost. Now they got the exclusive deal with mobile operators in many countries to  launch sms tweeting.

India’s largest mobile operator Airtel is now implementing this facility all over INDIA. Soon many mobile operators will engage in this service.

Airtel offers users to send tweets @ Rs 1 and its absolutely free to receive tweets.

Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone says “Our partnership with  Airtel, the largest mobile operator in India, means a huge population of people can now send tweets at standard rates and receive tweets for free.”

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.

What’s new with Twitter @ Airtel?

Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service today in India works only on a web or a WAP site (basically needing the consumer to be internet ready). Finally Twitter will be available in India on SMS only on the Airtel network. There is exclusive period, in which only Airtel consumers will be able to use the service on SMS across the nation.

How does one register for Twitter?

New User

• SMS Signup to 53000 @ Re 1 per SMS

• Follow instructions to go ahead and complete the registration

Existing User – Wanting to link their device to the Twitter A/c

• SMS Start to 53000 @ Re 1 per SMS

• Follow instructions to complete linking your Airtel phone to your Twitter A/c

What is that any consumer needs to be able to use Twitter @ Airtel?

There are 3 types of consumers on Twitter –

• New User – SMS Signup to 53000

• Existing User with only a Twitter id but having linked the mobile phone to the Twitter account – SMS Signup to 53000

•Existing User with a Twitter id and having linked the Mobile number to the id – The consumer will be directly active on the service. There will be nothing that the consumer will have to do.
